The Cheesecake Factory Must Die

The Cheesecake Factory — Get to the chooper!Beware the Cheesecake Factory in downtown Waikiki, for it will lead to your doom. While in BYU-Hawaii you will surely encounter indomitable peer pressure to make the sojourn at least once.

Don’t give in, remember what you stand for and know the tactics of the enemy who would see you spend significant amounts of money and time on what is the most over-hyped and craptacular dining experience Oahu has to offer.

University Gives Students Shaft During Jubilee Week

The fury of Jubilee Week is now safely behind us. The week-long activities were a major success and a tribute to the spirit of this institution. After years of planning and preparation it is time to breath a big sigh of relief.

However, there was one incy-bitsy-tiny mistake the administration and faculty made: they screwed over their own students.

The Simple Life

People I struggle to understand: Those content with less.

I had a chat with an old friend from the east coast today. He’s about my age. Intelligent guy. He decided to not go to college. He’s making about 35K a year doing freelance work for various outlets. I know that life well, I did it on top of my undergraduate work for the first two years I was in college.

He’s getting married soon.

Life of a Nomad

I received my eviction notice this morning. The landlords have decided to shred my lease and stop renting to university students. I have 45 days to vacate. According to the Housing Department on campus, this is completely legal.

At this point, I don’t know where I’ll go but I need to work fast to get an apartment lined up for summer and fall.

Also, this marks the 4th time I’ve moved within a two year period. I haven’t stayed in the same place for longer than 8 months. I’m getting used to abrupt moves. I think I even enjoy them.

If anything, it ensures life’s never dull.

Skin Deep

A report published in the New York Times claims parents treat “pretty” children better and “ugly” children worse:

Researchers at the University of Alberta carefully observed how parents treated their children during trips to the supermarket. They found that physical attractiveness made a big difference.

The researchers noted if the parents belted their youngsters into the grocery cart seat, how often the parents’ attention lapsed and the number of times the children were allowed to engage in potentially dangerous activities like standing up in the shopping cart. They also rated each child’s physical attractiveness on a 10-point scale.

The findings, not yet published, were presented at the Warren E. Kalbach Population Conference in Edmonton, Alberta.

Fijian Bonfire

An often-disregarded law on Oahu: Fires (especially bonfires) are illegal on all beaches due to safety concerns. In fact, Bishop Smith sternly lectures anyone who has attend BYUH 2nd Ward about how he will personally squash any fires you start in his capacity as HRI’s chief security goon.

That being said, last night starting around 10:00 the Fijian Club put on one of the great bonfires I’ve attended in my 2.5 years in Hawaii.

Before getting into some specifics, let me address one question I keep getting asked: How does one determine if there’s some bonfire action going on?

Attack of the Turtle Bay Protesters!

The strikers were out in force at Turtle Bay over the weekend. It is my sad duty to report to you that they obstructed traffic and delayed our weekly game of volleyball by a whopping five minutes.

Some pictures:

Campus Movie Night

A mere 50 cents can buy you a ticket in the air conditioned confines of the McKay Auditorium to watch a censored version of your favorite movies. This week — Phantom of the Opera.

Kill me now.

Friday night in the islands of aloha and this is how people choose to live it? 5 of the 7 people I’ve called tonight are going. We could be cruising up to Haliwea, going spear fishing at night, making a bonfire (as cliched as even that is) or even playing a stupid board game.

Instead, it’s an estrogen-filled adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

This is one island adventure you can count me out of.

Friday the 13th: Aloha-style

Lesson of the Day: Don’t tailgate other vehicles on Kam Highway. You’ll always lose. Allow me to show you why:

Friday the 13th: Aloha WreckFriday the 13th: Aloha Wreck, Part 2

I was in my room when I heard it — the sound of screeching tires followed by the unmistakable sound of impact.

You could almost sense it coming.

The other vehicle involved, a girl driving an SUV, sustained virtually no damage.

Second lesson of the day?

SUV’s suck.

The Last Chance

I dropped my scholarship application off to the School of Business today.  This is the last time I’ll be able to apply with graduation on the near horizon.  I’ve applied for scholarships every semester for the last two and a half years.

They’ve never given me a dime.

While 3.5 isn’t the most impressive GPA around, you’d think it’d be worth something.

I don’t care if it’s $25, or $50.  Any thing’s better than nothing.  It would be nice to be able to say “Ya, I had a scholarship at BYU-Hawaii” since I was given $2,000+ every academic year at my old university.

I won’t hold my breath.

On a more humble note, I don’t mind per se if I’m passed over again. After all, the Church subsidizes 80% of tuition making all BYU schools an absolute steal in terms of value and prestige.

No student at BYU-Hawaii has any right to complain about tuition costs.
